🔬 What is NBR Rubber?
NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is a synthetic rubber formed by the copolymerization of acrylonitrile and butadiene. Acrylonitrile content (ACN) in NBR ranges from 18% to 50%, where higher ACN provides better oil resistance but reduced low-temperature flexibility. This material is also known as Buna-N or nitrile rubber.
Historically, NBR was developed in the 1930s as a solution to the automotive industry's need for oil-resistant materials. Nitrile molecules in its structure provide high polarity that makes it resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons, mineral oils, and fuels. This chemical uniqueness distinguishes it from natural rubber or SBR.
Physically, NBR sheets are generally black (with carbon black filler) or natural brown. The material has tensile strength of 10-30 MPa and good elasticity with elongation at break up to 400%. We provide various NBR grades, including standard, food grade, and HNBR (Hydrogenated NBR) for extreme applications.
⚙️ Key Functions of NBR Rubber
Hydraulic & Pneumatic Sealing: As O-rings, U-cups, and cylinder seals to withstand hydraulic oil pressure and compressed air up to 3000 psi.
Engine & Piping Gaskets: For rubber gaskets in fuel, lubrication, and cooling systems of heavy vehicles and industrial machinery.
Abrasion-Resistant Linings: As protection for conveyors, rollers, and friction components exposed to abrasive materials and oils.
Food Processing Components: FDA-compliant grades for food processing applications in contact with vegetable oils and animal fats.
Health & Medical Products: Chemical-resistant medical gloves and pharmaceutical machinery components requiring sterilization resistance.
Storage Tank Linings: For fuel tanks, lubricating oils, and other non-polar chemicals.
💡 Benefits of Using NBR Rubber
✅ Best Oil & Fuel Resistance: Resistant to gasoline, diesel, engine oil, and aliphatic hydrocarbons
✅ Broad Chemical Resistance: Resists alcohols, petroleum solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, and industrial chemicals
✅ Wide Temperature Stability: Optimal performance from -40°C to +120°C (special grades up to +150°C)
✅ Superior Wear Resistance: Abrasion resistance 3x better than natural rubber
✅ Consistent Elasticity: Low compression set for dynamic seal applications
✅ Cost-Effective: More economical solution compared to other premium oil-resistant materials
✅ Fabrication Flexibility: Easy to cut, shape, and bond with standard adhesives
